Dark Sky Clock privacy

Location, forecast requests, local preferences, and external services in Dark Sky Clock.

Scope and provider

Dark Sky Clock is a first-party app developed by David Pfeffer through ByteNik Solutions LLC. This notice describes the current web app and the location and preference behavior used in the native versions under development. It will be updated if a release changes these practices.

Location

You can choose a location or request your device’s current location. Precise device location is requested when you choose that option; it is not needed to browse forecasts for a chosen place. An initial approximate location may be derived from your network connection and is identified as approximate in the app.

Coordinates are sent to the forecast service to retrieve conditions and calculate the relevant forecast. The app does not request background location access or build a location history.

Preferences on your device

Selected-location and display preferences are stored locally using browser storage or native app preferences. Browser site data can be removed through your browser settings; native app data is managed through the operating system.

Network requests and maps

Forecast and hosting services process requests and connection information, including IP addresses, as needed to deliver and operate the app. Those requests can include the coordinates and forecast information you selected.

The location map uses OpenStreetMap tiles. Map requests can reveal the area being viewed and your IP address to the map provider. Opening an external map shares the chosen location with that service. See the OpenStreetMap Foundation privacy policy.

Support

If you send a support message or screenshot, the details you choose to share are used to investigate and respond. You can use a nearby public location in a report if you do not want to share your precise position.

Questions and updates
